On April 27, 2021, India recorded a grim milestone, with its COVID-19 death toll surpassing 2 lakh. The country reported 3,306 fatalities in a single day, marking the first time daily deaths crossed the 3,000 threshold since the pandemic began. India's total fatalities reached 2,01,186, placing it behind the U.S., Brazil, and Mexico in global death toll rankings.
Additionally, 3,62,723 new COVID-19 cases were reported, raising the total case tally to nearly 1.8 crore. Maharashtra remained the worst-affected state with 66,358 new cases and 895 deaths, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Kerala.
While 2,59,542 recoveries were recorded on April 27, the pandemic's strain on testing and healthcare infrastructure continued to grow. On April 26, 16.58 lakh samples were tested, a slight increase compared to the previous week. However, the number of tests conducted per confirmed case has sharply declined, indicating a need for expanded testing.
Vaccination efforts showed a positive trend, with 33.59 lakh doses administered in 24 hours, a significant increase from the previous day. Despite this, the surge in cases underscored the urgent need for intensified vaccination drives and pandemic response measures.
The data reflects the immense challenges faced by India as it battled one of the most severe waves of COVID-19 infections worldwide.
