India has surpassed 1 million Covid-19 cases, becoming the third country to do so, following the United States and Brazil. As of Friday, the nation's total cases reached 1,003,832, with 25,602 deaths recorded, including a record 687 fatalities in a single day. Despite the alarming number of cases, the actual number of active Covid-19 patients is 342,473, with recoveries rising to 635,756.
The country saw a significant spike of 34,956 new cases in a single day, just three days after crossing the 900,000 mark. The Ministry of Health emphasized that the number of active cases has been steadily declining due to proactive containment measures, including house-to-house surveys, timely contact tracing, and increased testing.
India’s testing capacity continues to grow, with a total of 130,727,718 samples tested as of July 16. While India's cases per million population are lower compared to countries like Russia and the U.S., experts predict that the peak of the pandemic is still months away, which may strain the healthcare system.
The mortality rate is concerning, with over 70% of deaths occurring due to comorbidities. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Karnataka have reported the highest number of cases and fatalities. The situation remains fluid, with the government continuously adapting its response to the evolving crisis.
India’s healthcare system is preparing for further strain, as experts anticipate continued rises in cases as the pandemic progresses.
