Farooq Abdullah’s Arrest and the Shrinking of India’s Allies in Kashmir

Farooq Abdullah's arrest under the Public Safety Act (PSA) marks a significant shift in Kashmir's political landscape. A long-time pro-India leader, Abdullah's detention comes amid India's revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status. His son, Omar Abdullah, is also under house arrest. The arrest has shocked Kashmir, where the Abdullah family and the National Conference (NC) were central to pro-India politics. Critics argue the arrest is an abuse of the PSA and reflects India's disregard for human rights in the region.

The Mufti family, another pro-India political force, has also faced backlash, with Mehbooba Mufti under house arrest after the revocation of Article 370. This crackdown weakens India's support base in Kashmir, raising concerns about the region’s future. Human rights organizations have condemned these actions, calling them a violation of basic freedoms. The ongoing political repression risks further destabilizing Kashmir.
