At least 12 protestors have been killed in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, following a police shooting during a demonstration against the Sterlite Copper factory. The plant, owned by British-based Vedanta Resources, has faced significant criticism due to pollution concerns.
The violence broke out as protestors clashed with police, prompting law enforcement to open fire. Dozens were injured in the incident. The deaths have sparked outrage, with Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi condemning it as "state-sponsored terrorism."
Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami stated that an inquiry would be conducted but supported the police's actions, citing the need to protect public life and property. Families of the victims will receive compensation of 1 million rupees ($14,700).
