Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, marking the culmination of his first official visit to India. The visit has faced complications, including a diplomatic incident where Canada invited a Sikh extremist to an official dinner, a decision it later rescinded.
Despite the controversies, Trudeau engaged with the visit enthusiastically, including participating in an impromptu Bhangra dance. Modi, who usually greets foreign leaders personally at the airport, welcomed Trudeau via Twitter a day before their meeting. The leaders finally met six days after Trudeau's arrival, signing various agreements to strengthen Indo-Canadian relations.
Trudeau’s visit has faced criticism in India, with some accusing his government of being lenient towards Sikh extremists. His family’s choice to wear traditional Indian outfits during the trip sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some found it amusing, others disapproved, noting that Indians do not typically dress like Bollywood film stars.
Trudeau and Modi later met at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Delhi's presidential palace, to discuss trade, defence, climate change, and civil nuclear energy cooperation.
