A devastating fire broke out during an unauthorized fireworks display at the Puttingal Devi Temple in Paravoor, Kerala, early Sunday, claiming over 100 lives and injuring more than 380 people. The incident occurred during a Hindu festival attended by thousands. The fire was triggered when a spark from the fireworks ignited a stored cache of fireworks, causing explosions and flames that trapped many people.
Local police are investigating charges against the temple board for illegal storage of explosives and possible culpable homicide. The temple had previously been denied permission for the display, but the organizers proceeded with it anyway, disregarding safety concerns. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the site to meet with local officials and assist the survivors.
