The Supreme Court of India has modified its earlier decision, now permitting the inclusion of photos of Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, Governors, and State Ministers in government advertisements. Previously, only images of the President, Prime Minister, and Chief Justice of India were allowed.
This decision came after multiple pleas from the central government and states, including poll-bound West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, arguing that the earlier ruling infringed on fundamental rights and the federal structure. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi emphasized that excluding other ministers could promote a “personality cult,” contrary to democratic principles.
The court upheld other conditions from its original verdict, ensuring regulation of public advertisements while recognizing the accountability of state leaders to the public.
