India has successfully concluded its massive evacuation operation in Yemen, rescuing 5,600 people, including 4,640 Indians and 960 nationals from 41 countries. The operation was conducted amidst the ongoing conflict in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition is fighting against Houthi rebels.
The final leg of the evacuation saw the last C-17 flight from the Indian Air Force, carrying 95 evacuees, land in Kochi. This marked the completion of the air operations, with over 2,900 Indians flown out of the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, by 18 special flights, as well as additional evacuations from various ports by naval vessels.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj confirmed that the evacuation was complete and announced that the Indian Embassy in Yemen would be closing. Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh, who had been overseeing the operation from Djibouti, would also return.
The evacuation was a significant operation involving warships, merchant vessels, and air force planes, showcasing India's commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad. The situation in Yemen remains volatile, with fierce fighting between Saudi-led forces and Houthi rebels.
