Heavy floods and inundation in Assam and Meghalaya have claimed 85 lives, according to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Assam reported 39 deaths, while 46 people lost their lives in Meghalaya. The NDRF, which had been engaged in rescue operations for over a week, has now shifted its focus to relief efforts as water levels are beginning to recede in the affected regions.
NDRF Chief O.P. Singh, following an aerial survey with Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, highlighted the worst-hit areas in Assam, including Goalpara, Kamrup (rural), and Boko, as well as the Garo Hills and Tura in Meghalaya. These areas experienced widespread destruction due to the floods.
With 16 NDRF teams deployed, around 6,000 people have been rescued, and 80 quintals of food and essential items have been distributed to those stranded. Night operations are ongoing to ensure continued assistance to the flood-affected people.
