A 22-year-old woman was killed, and 14 others injured, including two seriously, when two bombs exploded on the Bangalore-Guwahati tri-weekly express at Chennai Central Station on Thursday morning. The explosions occurred shortly after the train arrived at Platform No. 9 at 7:15 a.m. The bombs were placed under seats in the reserved sleeper coaches S4 and S5.
The deceased, Swati, a post-graduate from Hyderabad working in Bangalore, was traveling to meet her parents in Vijayawada. The explosion caused a stampede as passengers scrambled for safety. The train was delayed for nearly four hours, and investigations were launched, with sniffer dogs and bomb disposal teams deployed to search for further threats.
Railway authorities and police cordoned off the area, and the main train lines were unaffected, though many approaching trains were delayed. Southern Railway announced compensation for the victims, and further investigations are underway by a Special Investigation Team. The case will also be transferred to the CB-CID for further inquiry.
