India's Historic Medal Haul at the 2012 London Olympics

India's performance at the 2012 London Olympics was remarkable, with the nation securing six medals, including two silver and four bronze. This was considered India's best showing at the Olympics.

Gagan Narang won a bronze in men's 10-meter air rifle on July 30, marking India's first medal at the Games. On August 3, Vijay Kumar clinched silver in the men’s 25-meter rapid fire pistol event. Saina Nehwal made history by winning a bronze in women's singles badminton, becoming the first Indian to earn an Olympic medal in badminton. Mary Kom followed with a bronze in women’s flyweight boxing on August 8, becoming the first Indian female boxer to win an Olympic medal. Yogeshwar Dutt secured another bronze in men’s freestyle 60 kg wrestling on August 11, while Sushil Kumar won a silver in freestyle wrestling on August 12, making him the first Indian to win medals in two consecutive Olympics.

This impressive tally placed India at 55th in the overall medal standings.

A tragic accident struck Gujarat’s Vadodara district on the morning of July 9, 2025, when a 43-year-old bridge collapsed without warning, sending multiple vehicles plunging into the Mahisagar River. At least 12 people lost their lives, including three members of a single family, and nine others were injured in the sudden and shocking incident that occurred around 7:30 am.
