A special court convicted 31 people and acquitted 63 others in the Godhra train burning case, accepting the prosecution's theory of a pre-planned conspiracy. On February 27, 2002, Coach S-6 of the Sabarmati Express, carrying 59 people mostly returning from Ayodhya, was set on fire at the Godhra station.
The court found the 31 guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder, but acquitted key suspects like Moulana Umarji and Bilal Hussain Kalota, who were previously considered major conspirators. The owner of the Aman Guest House, Abdul Razzak Kurkur, was among those convicted.
The judgment was delivered in camera at Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad, and a separate hearing for sentencing will take place on February 25.
